Who is Dr. Baker?
First, a brief introduction. I'm Dr. Don Baker, a 1980 graduate of Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Although I received an excellent education, it was limited to conventional Western medicine. I was inspired to offer an alternative as well, and studied veterinary acupuncture with one of the first classes offered in the U.S. I tended to sport horses, pets, and police dogs up and down the U.S. east coast and in Saudi Arabia. I added courses of study in homeopathy and attended Botanical Medicine in Modern Clinical Practice offered by Columbia University's medical school.
I dealt with inflammation, be it acute or chronic, day in and day out. Inflammation causes pain and loss of function resulting in a degraded quality of life as well as tissue and organ damage, making aging a hardship, not a pleasure. I studied inflammation and the multitude of diseases that result from inflammation until understanding these at the level of cell biology. This understanding led me to create an herbal formula targeting the biochemical origins of inflammation and degeneration-cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases.
As fate would have it, my wife, Judy, and I welcomed a beautiful Akita puppy into our home. Soon this gorgeous animal began to deteriorate right before our eyes. The light went out of his eyes, he became lethargic, and he began to lose his hair. The hair was replaced by very thick black skin. The skin was like a crust that would flake off. We slathered him in mineral oil, and he wore a t-shirt at all times. The dog was miserable, as were we.
During this progression, we evaluated him by every dermatology specialist and University in our area. His 'skin disease' was unresponsive to treatment and continued to worsen. Experts agreed that euthanasia was the most compassionate option in his case. It was clear to me that this wasn't just skin disease-he was physically ill to the point of inappetence and severe weakness. His skin, his gut, and everything in between were involved-he could barely lift his head. A leading alternative veterinarian in our area hospitalized him and provided a bit of relief. Our discussion with him led to the conclusion that there was an autoimmune component to his condition. We introduced my herbal formula to his regimen and began to see a change. After 2 weeks, a light came back into his eyes; slowly, he regained his strength, and the black crust and rancid smell disappeared. He slowly became the beautiful dog he was meant to be. He was never cured of his disease, but we were able to manage it for over 12 years successfully.
